We Are All Everything
When I was young, I definitely could be classified as a worrier. I remember crying about just turning 10 and wishing I could stay “one-digit” forever. Whenever I would find myself worrying, my dad was the first person I would go to. His go-to method to help me relax was to sing and play the song You Are the Everything by R.E.M. I have countless memories of him singing this song to calm me down. As a child, the song always brought me an immediate sense of calm and comfort.
As a child, I wasn’t one to analyze song lyrics, but as I have grown older this song has developed into a whole melody as I have begun to further understand its lyrics. This song has grown from a song of comfort to a song of sheer perspective. As I have learned more about the concept of Oneness, this song has become a reminder of the fact that we are all connected, and the sheer unfathomable beauty that comes with that.
Additionally, in an interview with the lead singer of R.E.M, he goes on to say that this song was a tribute to his band mate’s daughter, which makes me really happy because it probably correlates to the way my dad views this song and his relationship with me.
In terms of an entrepreneurial mindset, this piece reminds me of the passion that comes with pursuing your venture. All the work pays off when you're doing something that you truly have a vision for, and whole-heartedly love.
This song helps me revert back to a state of child-like introspection given that it triggers fond memories from my childhood. I listen to it whenever I need emotional creative inspiration.
This reflection definitely helped me realize how much this song meant to me :)
